Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 Secrets

Premiere Pro isn’t for the faint of heart, but whether you’re creating a family vacation DVD or your own “I’m-going-to-be-a-YouTube-star” y video, it’s the ultimate tool for video editing. We’re going to assume you’ve been through the “Getting Started” part of Premiere’s help file, so don’t get all acidic if you can’t understand the instructions here.

Get your USB Microphone Working

If you’ve got a USB microphone-this may well be the one on your webcam or USB headset-and it isn’t working with Premier, there’s simple fix. First, in Windows XP’s Sound Control Panel applet, make sure you’ve selected your microphone as the default recording device (Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices> Audio). In Premier, go to Edit> Preferences>Audio Hardware and click on the ASIO Settings button. Under DirectSound Input Ports, select your USC microphone.

Working with Titles

Every movie needs introductory credits. To start with yours, go to File>New>Title. The dialog you see is replete with all sorts of text tools, not to mention drawing tools, should you feel the need to add shapes to your title. At the bottom of the dialog. You’ll find an assortment of styles that you can apply to the title-these work pretty much the same way as Layer Styles in Photoshop.

Once you’ve created a title, drag it from the Project panel to the Timeline panel and place it in one of the four video slots-usually the topmost, but we won’t judge you if you choose another.

Besides the obvious purpose, you can also use titles to create masks and use in other effects-we’ll come to those in a bit.

The Magic of Track Matte

The Track Matte effect can be used in Premiere the same way adjustment layers and masks can be used in Photoshop. If you’re not familiar with the latter, forget about it and read on. For example if you’ve got a close-up shot of yourself, you can use the Track Mattee effect to hide all those pores and skin blemishes without losing detail around the eyes and mouth-where your viewers are most likely to notice your tampering.

First, duplicate the video clip in the Timeline panel-we’ll be using this duplicate to clear out all the blemishes. Now scrub (that’s “drag the progress indicator”) over to the shot in question- this will help you place the track matte. Goto File>New>Title to bring up the Title dialog, and use the ellipse tool to draw ellipses over the eyes and mouth. They don’t have to be entirely accurate-just not too much bigger than said facial features.

In the Effects panel, chose Gaussian Blur under Video Effects> Blur and Sharpen ( We prefer using the search text box in the panel-just type in “gauss” and you’ll have your results). Drag the effect onto the upper video, in the Effect Controls Panel, expand the Gaussian Blur effect and adjust the Blurriness till you’re satisfied all the blemishes are gone, you might have to adjust the opacity to avoid edges looking too blurry, too, Ignoring the eyes and mouth for now, stop when you’re satisfied with the way the shot looks. Now drag the title you made into the video trace above this clip.

Finally, get to the Track Matte Key effect in the Effects Panel (it’s under keying) and drag it on the video you blurred. In the Effect Controls panel, expand Track Mattee Key and in the drop-down menu next to Matte, select the video tract that has your title. You’ll find that the ellipses are gone, and now you’ve got yourself a shot where the eyes and mouth are blurry, but the rest of the shot is these original. All you need to do is select the Reverse checkbox, and your effect is done. Almost, you might notice that you can easily make out where the ellipses ‘ edges were. To fix this, just apply a Gaussian Blur effect to the title clip and kick up the Blurriness till you’re happy.

You can also use the Track Matte Key to create a frame for your video, not to mention that “through the binoculars” effect that was so popular in spy movies of old. You can also use it with the Mosaic effect for the “kids-shouldn’t-be-seeing-this” look-especially if kids shouldn’t be seeing the portion in question.

Transitions Using the keyboard

If there’s a video transition you use very often, you can set it as your default, and then apply it using [Ctrl]+[D] every time you need it. To set a transition as a default, go to the Effects panel and expand Video Transitions. Choose your transition, right-click on it and select Set Selected as Default Transition. When you want to use it, all you have to do is make sure you’ve selected the clip you want to add the transition to, and hit the shortcut.

To change the duration of the default transition, go to Edit>Preferences>General and change the values to what you want.

Recovering Corrupt Projects

Random OS crashes or power failures have a way of laying hard work to waste, but with Premiere Pro, there might just be come hope when files go corrupt. Before you try anything else, though, remember that Premiere Pro auto-saves projects-you can find them in the same folder that you saved your project. In many cases, the last auto-save suffices, but if you’ve disabled auto-save (silly, silly) or you just have to have the latest version, try this, first get yourself an XML editor like XML Writer or XML Wrient. Open the corrupt project file-it’s just an XML document with a different extension-and use the “Check document” (or equivalent) tool. The editor should point you to invalid garbage like &$d. ~. Delete the data between the tags, but leave the tags themselves. Keep doing this till the XML editor stops giving you warnings-the exercise should taken you about a quarter hour. Save the file to another location (remember to add the .prproj extension) and open it-it should work now.

All about FLM

Adobe’s Filmstrip (FLM) file format enables you to do neat things like drawing on individual frames-and if these drawings form a coherent animation. It’s called rotoscoping. You can’t do this in Premiere, though-you have to take your movie to Photoshop. After working on your movie, export it to the Filmstrip format-goto File>Export>Movie.Click on the Settings button in the export dialog box and choose Filmstrip under File Type. This file is going to take up a ridiculous amount of disk space, so make sure to take only a few seconds of video at a time (3 minutes of video took up about 8 GB when we did this).

You can now open the FLM file in Photoshop-make sure you shut Premiere and other demanding applications, because this process can make your system scream bloody murder. Advance through frames using the Animation panel, to draw on frames, create new layers on them and work your magic. Once you’re done with a frame, flatten the layers to save on file size. When you’re done with all the frames, remember to save the file in the FLM format again. You can now get it back into Premiere for any other work you want to do with it.

What Hardware Tips Does Microsoft Give For Vista

Compatibility Of Vista

The hardware requirements for the new operating system were enormous in the beginning of beta phase. Since the first Vista announcement, the Microsoft spokesmen have behaved like doctors, who provide the worst possible diagnosis. The requirements are at least one, or even better a two GB memory, a fast 3Dgraphics card with at least 256MB memory, double or multi-core CPUs and a RADIO-group of faster hard disks. In the final criteria list, things are not even half as bad.

As a minimum requirement for Windows Vista Basics, new PCs are required to have a clock frequency of 800MHz for the CPU, 15GB free space on the hard disk and 512 MB working memory.

If one is to believe this data, then, with a memory upgrade, at least five-year-old PC will be suitable for Vista. Only those who want to use Aero, the new interface look with free scalable windows and other contents, need an extra DirectX-9-video card.

In fact, Microsoft provides a program for windows XP, which tests the “Vista compatibility”

of your computer after you have taken care of the minimum requirements. However the Vista upgrade Advisor [ www.microsoft.com/windowsvista ] provides users nothing only a few yes-no answers to certain questions and has very rudimentary suggestions for upgrading.

Do even older programs run under Vista?

Compatibility Of Vista

Remarkably, many applications such as Nero could so far be started only with the program compatibility assistant, which in fact performs well. This makes the programs think that they are running on a older operating system. Games can be a problem though . There have been cases of games crashing every time they are run , which has forced game developers to release their own patches to ensure their games run smoothly.

Incidentally:

The old XP drivers also work under vista. However there is no guarantee because the more system -Oriented the drivers are, the unlikelier is the compatibility.

How Is The First Service Pack For Vista ?

A few months back, speculation was rife on Vista SP1. Microsoft had let the cat out of the bag when they said that “The API for the Kernel Patch guard should be provided to Symantec & Co. before the Vista Service Pack 1”-In an Interview It had been Known That Microsoft is Already Looking for Interested client companies as “Beta Testers”. The Service Pack 1, as in case of Windows XP, appeared a little after a year after the lunch. And as it turns out, it didn't do well. Numerous reports of Installation Issues, Lengthy Installation times and system performance deteriorating after installing SP1 put a damper on the service pack and made many users think twice before installing it .

Incidentally:

things got even worse when Rumors of Microsoft releasing a new OS in 2009 caused Vista users to raise a hue and cry about it.

Symbian Series or Smart Mobiles Application Tricks 2

Smart Mobile Application Tricks Have Been Updated Try These And Enjoy..

Zooming In And Out

Using the image viewer on Symbian phones is fine, but being able to navigate and perform basic operations without any guidance is a different thing. Use the 5 key to zoom into the image and 0 to zoom out. To move the image in different directions, use the 2,4,6 and 8 keys.

Quick-delete Message

Deleting of files on a Symbian phone normally means you need to go to Options and choose Delete. A quicker way is to use the C button. This will delete the file. All you need to do is confirm the delete command.

Installing New Symbian Themes

It’s always nice to have a change in look. There are plenty of free sites with theme downloads for Symbian phones. First find the download for your Symbian version and phone. Copy it to the phone via cable or Bluetooth. Once you’re done, run the installer and the theme will be installed. To enable the theme, go to Menu >Tools > Themes. Move to the theme you want to install. Choose options > Preview to get an idea of what the theme looks like. If you like what you see, choose Apply and the theme will be set.

Quick Silent Mode

Generally, to switch profiles from normal to silent and so on, one would press the power button and then select a profile from the list, but many S60 phones have a feature that allow the user to switch to Silent mode with just a single button press. Hold down the # key and the Silent mode is turned on; hold it down again and you’ll be back to the General Profile. The power buttonalso works as a toggle pressing it multiple times allows switching to different profiles.

Better Alarm App

Many users complain of having to enable a single alarm every single day. Using a third-party alarm software seems to be the only way around this problem. There’s software like Y Alarms from www.drjukka.com . Copy and install the program, then go to Menu > DrJukka.com > Y-Alarms.

To create a new alarm, choose Options > New alarm. Here you can set the frequency, time, and type of alarm along with a message that you want to appear when the alarm goes off. Yu can set many such alarms in the same manner for different reminders.

Quick Numerical Input :

You don’t always have to go to the number mode to enter a number while entering text. Holding down a key in alphabet mode will enter the number directly.

Quick Voice Dial :

Many a time, there’s not enough light to scan through your phone book and make calls. Instead of trying to look through your phone, you can use the voice dialer. While your phone is in standby mode, hold down the right soft key and you’ll be prompted to speak out the name of the contact from the phone book.

Symbian S60 The un threaten king of Mobile

Symbian S60 Series Mobile users Applications Only for solvater

Symbian leads the mobile phone OS market – much more than Microsoft with its Windows Mobile platform – mostly thanks to the complete domination of Nokia and Sony Ericsson in the Indian mobile phone space.

Almost every mid-ranged phone has the Symbian S60 OS running on it, which is why we’ve complied yet another list of simple as well as advanced tips for it We tried these out on a Nokia N73, but they should work just fine with almost all Symbian S60 based phones.

Select Apps By Pressing A Number

Launching applications is a pain, and scrolling through the list using the joystick makes it even more painful. When you switch to the main menu, the easiest way to go around applications and run them is to directly press the number of the application. For example, the left topmost application is 1, the right topmost one is 3, and so on. If you don’t like the grid-styled view, you can move to the list view:go to Options>Change View > List. The shortcuts can’be used here as well, with the topmost item being 1 and the ones below 2,3,4 etc.

Quick-launching The Media Player

On most Nokia phones, you’ll find a dedicated Media button which, when pressed, gives you the list of multimedia applications. To launch your default media player, simply hold down the key and it will open directly. You can go about adding music tracks and playing them.

Launching the Browser Using A Single Key

Many phones have a dedicated Internet button. The (i) button on some phones might not do much other than entering the number. Hold down the sme button for a longer period and you’ll find that the default browser loads up.

Multitasking in Symbian

We love to Alt-Tab between applications because it makes life easier-it’s lucky Symbian-based phones have this feature as well. The Menu key, which normally launches the menu of applications, if held down for a longer period, shows a list of open applications currently being run (on the left). You can scroll and use the application, and shut them down if you want to.

Entering A New Line

While we type messages or notes, we often want to start a new paragraph or new line. Pressing 0 only enters a space, and if you press it again , the number 0. To start a new line, press the 0 key thrice!

Voice-mail Setup

The default key for voice mail is 1. Hold down the 1 key and you will be able to access your voice mail. It’s very likely it won’t be set up by default, so the first time you do this, you will be required to enter the voice mail number.

Speed-dial Setup

Speed-dial numbers are a single button-press shortcut to call up those you call most often without accessing the Phone book. It can be done by holding down the number you want. If you haven’t set up speed dial, hold down the number you want to use. It will ask you to assign a number. Choose Yes. Next, select the number from the list and choose Select. The number 1 is usually dedicated to voice mail, and the number 0 for services.

Windows Common Keyboard Shortcuts

Windows Key Board Short Cuts

Use the 'wild card' (*) in system searches. It's possible to find all pictures by using *.jpg, for instance. To list virtually every graphic on your hard drive, try *.jpg; *.png; *.gif; *.bmp. Multiple searches are possible using a semicolon followed by a space, then the next item. This works foe other file types, too, like *.doc or *.txt.

The use of shortcut keys instead of mouse clicks is much more efficient. Re-training oneself to do so is a bit more challenging. Most folks know that pressing the CTRL key plus x cuts and item, CTRL+ c copies and CTRL+ v pastes, but don't forget to 'unload' the clipboard after copying a large graphic or hitting 'Print Screen.' Just copy something small, like a word of text, to replace that large load. Otherwise it ties up precious memory.

Here are some more to try:
CTRL+ A: Highlights all text in document
CTRL+ close window closes all windows
Windows: Display the Start menu
Windows + D: Minimize or restore all windows
Windows + E: Display Windows Explorer
Windows + F: Display Search for files
Windows + Ctrl + F: Display Search for computer
Windows + F1: Display Help and Support Center
Windows + R: Display Run dialog box
Windows + break: Display System Properties dialog box
Windows + shift + M: Undo minimize all windows
Windows + tab: move through taskbar buttons
Windows + U: Open Utility Manager
CTRL+ Z is an unlimited UNDO

In rich text environments like Outlook Express or Microsoft Word, SHIFT will traditionally 'select' and CTRL will 'move.' CTRL+ BACKSPACE will delete entire words at a time; CTRL+ HOME will take you to the top of the document; CTRL+ SHIFT + HOME will select all data between your cursor and the top of your document (END will take you to the end); CTRL+ LEFT CURSOR will move you one word back (and RIGHT will move you right); SHIFT+ HOME will select all text in that paragraph or line.

Adobe Sound Booth CS3 Secrets

Adobe Sound Booth CS3 Tutorial

Adobe Audition makes way for Adobe Soundbooth in the CS3 release (the former is being sold separately for audio professionals), and though it lacks the upper-professional qualities of Audition, it makes for a more-than-competent audio editing tool. You’ll find the Soundbooth demo on this month’s Entertainment DVD. Again, We’re assuming you’ve spent some time familiarising yourself with Soundbooth before reading ahead.

The Interface

If you’ve used Adobe Audition before (or its predecessor, Cool Edit Pro), you’ll find some familiar and some totally different aspects in Soundbooth’s interface. For one thing the interface has been tweaked to be “task-based” – so you’ll find audio clean-up tools in the same place, for instance. You’ll find the Tasks panel on the left of the interface.

You won’t find a separate tool for audio normalisation any more-at the bottom of the Editor panel, you’ll find a slider that says 0.0 db-click and drag this to increase or decrease the overall volume of your sound clip. You also have buttons that’ll instantly apply a Fade In or Fade Out effect to your sound clip.

Reading Sound

When you open a music file in soundbooth, you see the Waveform view, which shows you the amplitude of the sound over time. You’ll also be able to use the Spectral Analysis view (View>Spectral Frequency Display)-this shows you the frequencies that make up the sound. The vertical axis shows the frequencies, and the colour indicates how lour that particular frequency component is (blue is soft, yellow is loud). Just as you can use the wave form view to selectively listen to different time-slot of the clip. You can choose to hear only specific frequency slots in the spectral view. Just choose the Frequency selection tool, highlight the frequency range you want to hear, and hit play

All this might sound like goofing off, but there’s a very important sides-effect to knowing what the Spectral Display is showing you – it lets you visually identify clicks, hiss , and other such undesirable noise in your audio. Use the Zoom tool to zoom really close to the spectral waveform, and by looking at the right frequency ranges, you’ll be able to tell the difference between noise and the sound you want to be working on. If you look at the higher frequency ranges and see a lot of red speckles, that’s hiss. You can now use these Rectangular Marquee tool (Shortcut (M)) to select the offending areas and hit [Delete] to get rid of them. If you see bright vertical lines in your audio. It’s usually an indication or a nasty crackle or pop. You can even increase the detail in the special view by changing the Resolution under Remove a Sound in the Tasks panel. Higher resolutions will get you more detail, but will slow down you PC considerably.

Bear in mind that these are extreme measures that you should resort to only after you’ve tried the regular audio cleaning tools under Clean Up Audio in the Tasks Panel.

Compose Your Own

One of Soundbooth’s main tasks is to give you a tool that you can use to add soundtracks to your videos, the AutoCompose tool lets you create, or rather customise, background music for any video. You can also use the tool to add a little life to sounds you’ve already got. You’ll find AutoCompose Score in the Tasks panel. The idea is that you start with a score that’s already provided by Adobe or the community, and then customise it to meet your needs.

To start using the AutoCompose tool, open the video you want to add a soundtrack to (you don’t have to if you want to play with this feature) and select the Browse Scores button in the Tasks panel. This will take you to Adobe Bridge, where you can browse through the preview all the scores stores on your machine. You’ll be able to get a lot more scores online as well.

To start customising the score, select the Keyframing button next to Editing in the Tasks panel. In the Editor panel, you’ll now be able to set keyframes for different values of intensity, Synthesiser and Volume. To set a keyframe, just click on the track at the level you want-for example, if you want to suppress the score’s intro at the beginning, just create a keyframe near the bottom on the intensity tract. To kick up the intensity later, just create another keyframe close to the top. It’s actually much simpler and more intuitive than it sounds-try it.

Stacking Effects

If you experiment with a number of effects at a time, Soundbooth lets you add effects in Stacks-in the Effects panel, choose up to five effects to apply to your audio, and hit the Apply to File button to process them all. By default, the most-recently applied effect is put on the top of the stack, but you can change the order.

To adjust the settings for each effect, double-click on the effect in the rack or click on Settings. If you want effects’ setting dialogs to open as soon as you apply them, do Edit>Preference>General and select Auto-Open Effect Custom Settings.

Fade Out Tricks

The Fade Out button in the Editor panel doesn’t let you customise the fate-out time. However, hidden away at the top corners of the Editor panel, you’ll find a semi-transparent fade icon that you can drag out into the wave form. While dragging, move your mouse up or down to adjust the curve of the face, you’ll see a live preview of how the sound wave’s going to be altered. In the same vein, at the middle of either side of the Editor panel, you’ll find Trim handles that’ll let you easily cut out silences from the beginning or end of the clip.

Windows Vista does not memorize the username and password due to Buffalo Terastation

Windows Vista does not memorize the username and Password

Accessing Buffalo TeraStation, the external memory device, was not a problem till the change from Windows XP to Windows Vista. Since Vista was installed on the PC, the username and password must be entered during each access.

Solvater Tip:

The security settings in Windows Vista are at fault here. They determine which request/acknowledgement authentication protocol are used for the network registration. By default, it is set on NTLMv2 for Windows Vista (for NT LAN Manager Version 2). However, the Buffalo TeraStation still uses NTLM> To change the settings, click on the start button of the Vista menu and enter ‘Secpol.msc’ in the ‘RUN” field and press [Enter].

Confirm the start of the console with ‘Continue’. Finally, double click and open the ‘Security options’ in the ‘Local Policies’ tree. Select ‘Network security LAN Manager Authentication level’ in the list that is displayed next. A double click on it opens a dialog box. Here, change the ‘Local security settings’ default option from ‘Sent NTLMv2 response only’ to ‘Send LM & NTLM use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated’. Click ‘OK’.

Optical mouse shines continuously even when the PC is switched off

Motherboard Trouble shoot
Some motherboards like Asrocks enjoy great popularity amongst those who want to upgrade, but are willing to spend relatively less. However, after the modification, the optical mouse glows even when the PC is switched off.

Solvater Tip:

This happens with some other motherboards also. The cause of this strange occurrence is an uncommon jumper put on the main board, which is responsible for the powering of the USB buses. The provides the USB bus with the standby power (+5VSB) to enable the switching ‘ON’ of the computer via USB or PS2 devices. Connected devices were continuously supplied with electricity in this way.

If you change the position of the jumper from its 2/3 original position to the ½ pins, everything functions as usual and in a stable way. Note. Change the above jumper configuration only when the computer power cord is unplugged

Removable drive or USB Memory Stick is recognized but not displayed

USB Memory Stich Recogniged but not displayed

The moment you insert the USB memory stick in the USB port of the computers, Windows reports it with a typical message tone. However, at times, the Explorer does not display the removable drive or the normal dialogue box does not open. On the other hand, all the other hard disks and network permissions are displayed in the Explorer window.

Solvater Tip:

The problem hits frequent users who work in an administered network. Network administrators often add new network permissions literally overnight. If a USB stick is used for the first time, it receives the next free drive letter, for instance, “E:\Windows then maintains it even in the future. Now, the IT division and the network administrator have set up a network permission under “E:\” and there is a conflict with the USB stick. Windows adds the removable disk under “E:\” but displays only the network drive.

To solve the problem, you must change the drive letter of the USB stick. To do that, click on ‘Start |Settings | Control Panel | Administrative tools | Computer management’ or just right-click on My computer and click ‘Manage’. In the new window that opens, click on ‘Storage | Disk management’. In this window, you will find your removable drive, which has to be recognized by looking at the memory capacity. Open the context menu by highlighting the USB drive and then right clicking on it. Then, click on ‘Change drive letter and paths’ and finally the button ‘Change’. Now you can give an unused letter for the removable drive. Try to use letters as ‘x’, ’y’ or ‘z’, which are at the end of the alphabetical order, to avoid conflicts in the future.

The useful tool “Drive Manager” clearly lists out the drives. IT is developed by Alex Nolan and can be downloaded from www.alexnolan.net. With this freeware, you can manage the drives, make them invisible for the Explorer or even assign drive letter for sub-directories.

Retrieving the lost ‘E-mail button In IE 7 And Fit the full URL on printouts In IE 7

Retrieving the lost ‘E-mail button In IE 7

The ‘Mail’ button in Internet Explorer 6 was used to read mails or sent a link through an e-mail. This useful button is missing in version 7.

Solvater Tip:

The functions of the ‘Mail’ button have been dispersed in Internet Explorer 7. Yu can now open your mail program with the ‘Read Mail’ button in the browser but it is not shown by default. To enable the icon, click on ‘Tools’ and select ‘Toolbars|Customize’ and integrate the button in the toolbar. Now, go to ‘Read Mail’ in the ‘Available toolbar buttons’ dialog box under ‘Customize toolbar’ and then click on ‘Add’ and ‘Close’. You will then have to customize the toolbar so that you can see the button. If you cannot customize the toolbar, there is a chance that it is blocked. Unblock it by clearing the checkbox in front of ‘Tools | Toolbars | Lock the Toolbars’. If you want to sent a link or page through e-mail, then ‘Send Link by E-mail’ or on ‘Send Page by E-Mail’ in the toolbar.

Fit the full URL on printouts In IE 7

Sometimes, you may want to print out a Web page you’ve found, so that you can recommend the site to a fried later. But if the URL of the page is a long one, it’s likely to be truncated in the footer of the printed page. This is because Internet Explorer, by default, uses a large font and cuts off any URL that doesn’t fit on the same line to accommodate the date.

Solvater Tip:

To print the whole of a URL every time, click ‘Tools | internet Options’ and then on the “General’ tab, click the ‘Fonts’ button. Then, select a Web page font that is more compact than Time New Roman, for example, Vista’s ‘Courier New’ (This font, which is similar to Arial, will also become the default font for Web pages that don’t specify a fond). If that doesn’t print the entire Web address, give URLs a separate line. To do so, pull down the Printer toolbar and select Page Setup. Enter ‘&b&u’ in the Header field to devote the full header to the URL (aligned to the right). Then. Enter ‘&d&b&p& in the Footer field to print the date on the left and the page number on the right at the bottom of each page ( This procedure eliminates printing each page’s title, represented by ‘&w’. In our view, a Web page’s title takes up space that could be devoted to printing the full URL).

NOTE: The complete URL may not be printed in the same line if it is too long.

Reactivating the deactivated spell check In Thunderbird

Thunderbird 2.0 Spell Check

When you switch to version 2.0,dictionaries do not function even after reinstallation. But these are a prerequisite for the integrated spell check.

Solvater Tip:

The management of dictionaries in Thunderbird has undergone a fundamental change starting from version 2.0. Installation now takes place as a true extension of the personal profile. This means you can manage all dictionaries directly with ‘Tolls | Add-ons’.

THE ITCH:

The function does not work with the old dictionaries. You will require the new versions of all dictionaries. You can obviously install an old dictionary without getting an error message, but it just does not work.

We will tell you how to re-actuate the correction aids. First, download the latest versions of the dictionaries for Thunderbird 2.0 from http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/browse/type:3. Lock up the required language on the website and right-click on the corresponding ‘Install’ link. Then, open the ‘Save As’ context command and load the XPI file on your hard disk. Do not click directly on the line-otherwise the browser will try and install the data directly. Start Thunderbird click on ‘Install’ and browse to the XPI file of the new dictionary in the following dialog box. Then, go to ‘Open’ and ‘Install now’. Restart Thunderbird. Repeat the process for all the dictionaries which have to be integrated.

You still have to activate the database. Go to ‘Tools |Options’ and click on the ‘ Composition’ symbol. Then, go to the ‘Spelling’ tab and check whether the ‘Enable spell as you type’ option is switched on. Select the dictionary in the ‘language’ combination field. You can even change the language later when you want to compose messages in another language.

An easy way to secure and import filter rules In Thunderbird

Thunderbird

You have defined some filter rules for your e-mail account and would like to use these rules for other accounts as well. Besides, you also want to use the data on y our notebook.

Solvater Tips:
Thunderbird saves the filter rules in the ‘msgfilterrules.dat’ file. Yu can edit them directly, but it is easier to customize them using the free extension ‘Message filter Import/Export’. It integrates a menu command for managing filter rules in the e-mail client. This useful tool is available on
http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2474 Right-click on ‘Install now’ on the website and select the ‘Save Target As’ context command. You can now secure the extension on your hard disk. Start Thunderbird and go to ‘Tools | Extensions’.

Click on ‘Install’ and navigate to the downloaded XPI file and open it. Click on ‘Install now’ to start the setup and restart Thunderbird. To secure the rules of an account, go to ‘Tools |Message filter’. Set up the desired account and click on the newly visible button ‘Export Filter’ in the ‘Filter for’ combination field. Then name the text file and click on ‘Save’.

If you want to import the rules to another PC, it should also have the extension for Thunderbird. Go to ‘Tools | Import Filter’. Select the account in the combination field and click on ‘Import’. Browse to the text file which contains the rules and click on ‘Open’. You will receive a message after the import is complete. An additional note appears if you have imported the data to another account. Click OK to confirm the message. Thunderbird will restart. Now, check whether the import has been executed successfully under ‘Tools | Filter’.

NOTE: This method facilitates quick transfer of rules between mall accounts of the same Thunderbird installation and saves you the effort of finding and customizing the ‘msgfilterrules.dat’ file in the profile of the respective account.

Protecting your settings from being accessed by others

You use a computer with several user accounts. You want to ensure that only you, as administrator, can change important browser settings such as configuration of the proxy. However, users should be able to make changes in the general settings.

Solvater Tip :
The key to this is a configuration file, in which you block selected options and which you then encode online.

Determining options concerned, Type ‘about.config’ in the address bar of the browser and find the entries you want to block for other system users in the list. You cannot do without the configuration of the internet proxy set by you in the example. The line ‘network.proxy.type’ sees to it that Firefox uses the proxy. Therefore, you have to ensure that this line cannot be changed.

CREATING A CONFIGURATION FILE:

Start a text editor for this. Type two slashes in the first line and then go to the next line. Place the ‘lockPref’ character string before the presetting to be blocked. For example: lockPref (network.proxy.type’.,1),

You can add the entries for more settings that have to be blocked in a new line. That way, you can also ensure that Firefox always displays the preset homepage. Save this file in the TXT format, for instance, write as ‘firefoxsperre.txt.

ENCODING THE FILE:

Convert the block file you have just created so that other users cannot open it. The easiest way to do so is using an online encoder such as the tool on ‘http://alain.knaff.linux.lu/howto/MozillaCustomization/cgi/byteshf.cgi Click on ‘Upload.txt to get mozilla.cft /byteshift 13), on ‘Browse.

Then, browse to the TXT file you created and select ‘Open’ Click on Convert mozill.txt to mozilla.cfg’ to start the conversion and save the resulting file ‘mizilla.cfg’ in the programme folder of these browser, ‘C:\Programs\Mozilla Firefox’.

ACTIVATING THE BLOCK FILE:

You still have to integrate the converted file to the configuration of the browser. To do that, open the ‘freprefs’ sub folder on the Firefox program folder. Then, open the ‘all.js’ JavaScript file. Insert the following line at the end of the file: “pref(general.config.filename’,mozilla.cfg’).

Save the changes the restart Firefox. Now, the blocked values under ‘about.config’ has the ‘blocked’ status. Accessing them even through menu dialog boxes is not possible any more. You can stop ever experienced users from cracking the block by taking away these writing rights for ‘all.js’ from the. You can remove the reference to the CFG file within ‘all.js’ to lift the block at a later stage when it is no longer needed.

Opening new tabs directly next to the tab in current use In Firefox

Opening New Tabs Directly Next To The Tab In Current Use

Firefox always opens new tabs on the extreme right when you click on a link. You have to toggle between topics that are related to each other if several tabs are open at the same time. Or you have to shift the tabs. Both methods are not satisfactory.

Solvater Tip:

The free add-on ‘Tb Control’ changes the behavior of the browser in such a way that it opens the new tabs to the immediate right of the tab in use. The http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1480 link directs you to the download page. Here, click on ‘Install’ to open the ‘Software Installation’ dialog box. Click on ‘Install Now’ to start the setup. Select ‘Restart Firefox’ to activate the tool.

Now, the new positioning of tabs is set as default. Moreover, the tab to the immediate left is activated when you close a tab. This also simplifies the configuration of other properties of the index tab, setting of minimum and maximum breadth, and the symbol for closing. To customize, open ‘Tools | Add-ons’ and activate ‘options’. Then click on ‘Tab Control’ in the list and then on the accompanying ‘Settings’ button. Increase the minimum breadth of the tabs to ‘50’ because one cannot identify the contents of the tab if it is small. Select the ‘only on active tab’ setting in the combination field ‘Close key’ to prevent the accidental closing of a tab when changing to an inactive tab. Confirm the configuration with ‘OK”.

Protecting your system from new super cookies In Firefox 2.x

Firefox 2.x

Super cookies have started featuring on the menu cards of many websites, some of which are dubious in character. What are they? How can you protect your system from these elements or manage them?

Solvater Tip:

In addition to the classic cookies that are only up to four kilo bytes in size, there are much bigger Flash cookies and voracious domain memory objects (the so-called DOM cookies are also new). They grab up to five megabytes of space on the hard disk of your PC to store the information of an external website. Firefox 2.0 is the first browser to support these new standard memory objects. The cookie management of the browser does not display these objects along with the stored data, which means that they cannot be deleted.

Because you cannot know about the content of super cookies, you should block them except when you want to view a trustworthy website, which cannot be displayed properly if DOM cookies are not activated.

You can block the super cookies with the advanced configuration of Firefox. For this type ‘about.config’ in the address bar of thess browser and press (Enter). Search for ‘dom.storage.enabled’ in the list. Then right-click on this entry and select the ‘toggle’ context command to change its value to ‘false.

Using Office 2007 documents in all old versions of office

Files in the new Office formats often cause problems when they are opened with older versions of the software. Yet not many prefer to buy the new Office package just to work in an ‘upwardly compatible’way.

solvater Tip

You need not buy the new Office package. Microsoft has released the ‘Compatibility Pack’ solely for this purpose. You can download it from the Microsoft Download Center. Look for ‘FileFormatConverters.exe’ in the Download Center. Please ensure that you have the latest versions of Office XP and 2003 and that all important updates have been installed before you install the tool.

To install the ‘Compatibility pack’, start Windows Update or open the link http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/thankyou.aspx?familyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displayLand=en in the Internet Explorer

and install the available updates. Then, open the ‘FileFormatConverters.exe’ file and finish the installation process.

The packet does not add new entries to the start menu. However, you can control the installation of the tool through ‘Software’ in the control panel. Office applications will now display the necessary selection options for the new formats in the File menu. Moreover, you can now save documents created using older versions of Office in the new formats. For instance, the ‘File | Save As’ command in Word would be bandy here. Select the ‘Word 2007 document with macros’ setting in the ‘File type’ combination field.

BACKGROUND:

office 2007 uses a new XML format to save documents. Older versions do not support this format. In Word 2007, one can easily identify this format by the longer file extension DOCX or DOCM.

Defragmenting the swap file and Registry To Accelerate Your PC

Defragmenting the swap file and Registry To Accelerate Your PC

To accelerate your computer, regularly defragment the contents of the system hard disk. However, during the defragment process, important elements such as the swap file are skipped, resulting in the slowing down of the computer.

Solvater Tip

Windows and the current defragmenters cannot access these files which have been exclusively opened by the system. Therefore, the registry data and the swap file are usually ignored during the optimization, However, the files are used frequently and they take up a large amount of space. Therefore, their fragmenting slows down the system significantly. But then again, there are specialists to solve every problem. The tool ‘Pegedefrag' uses the start phase of the PCs to defragment the registry and swap file. During the start phase, Windows can access them.

After unpacking the zip archive, the tool can be readied for use by just calling ‘pagedefrag.exe’ without any further installation processes. It first shows how many clusters occupy the respective system files and how ‘fragmented’ they are. Besides the swap file, and the branches of the Registry, the tool also processes event protocols as well as the stand-by mode file. Its size corresponds to the quantity of the installed main memory.

APPLICATION:

For one time execution, select the option ‘Defragment at next boot’ and click on ‘OK’. Then, restart the computer. While booting, the tool completes its task and creates a status report. You can check the progress by calling Pagedefrag in Windows again and checking the actual status in the Pagedefrag dialog box. This kind of defragmentation must be repeated from time to time. You will be rewarded with remarkably shorter booting and shut down times for your computer.

AUTOMATION:

To automate the process, select the option ‘Defragment every boot’ in the Pagedefrag dialog box, change the value for ‘Defrag abort countdown’ to ‘0’, and confirm with ‘OK’. In future, ‘pagedefrag’ checks the status every time the system starts and then optimizes the files if required. The check takes just under a second.

If you do not wish to run the check on every boot, you can also automate the executin with the Task Planner. Use command ‘pagedefrag-o t 0’ in the command prompt for the that. It is used for one-time defragmentation on booting the next time.

Hacking With Vista Enabling remote control for PCs via Telnet Client

Hacking With Vista Enabling remote control for PCs via Telnet Client

Solvater Tip

Even Vista has an integrated Telnet Client, but it is deactivated by default because of the stringent security guidelines set to ensure that no communication channels are opened unnecessarily. This is how you can activate it, double click on ‘Programs and function’ in Contrl Panel and then click on ‘turn Windows features on or off’ on the left margin.

Click ‘Continue’ to confirm the query of the User Account Control. In the following list, search for the entry ‘Telnet-Client’ and select the preceding checkbox. Confirm the change with ‘OK’ and wait for the configuration of the systems. You can then call up the client as usual.

ATTENTION:

Take cares that you are actually activating the client and not the Talnet-Server by mistake. Otherwise, any external PC will be able to access your computer through the protocol. Because of the missing encryption, Telnet is a Security risk on the Internet. You can use the comparatively safer alternatives such as SSH or RDP.

Switching on and off devices on notebooks faster and Save Battery

Switching on and off devices on notebooks faster and Save Battery

A notebook should sustain battery life for as long as possible when on the move. Internal devices such as WLAN adapter or modem often remain unused and use up a lot of power unnecessarily.

Solvater Tip

The components that are not needed can be deactivated and reactivated using the Device Manager, but the process is complicated. A suitable alternative is the free command line tool ‘ Devcon’ from Microsoft. When you pack the required commands in a batch file, a double-click is enough to switch on and switch off the superfluous devices.Download the tool from ‘http://download.Microsoft.com/download/1/1/f/11f7dd10-272d-4cd2-896f-9ce67f3e0240/devcon.exe Start ‘devcon.exe’ and move both program versions into an empty folder. Now,copy the 32-Bit variant from the sub-folder ‘1386’ in the Windows folder. If you have logged in as an Administrator, you can use ‘devcon’ directly from the command line. You can obtain information regarding the tool using the command ‘Devcon help’ . Detailed instructions for individual commands can be obtained, if you use additional commands such as ‘Devcon help enable’.

Before you use the available commands, determined the most cryptic identification of the device concerned. For that, use the command ‘devcon find *>c:devices.txt’. The tool creates a devices.txt text file with an overview of all the available devices and their identifications. For further access to the devices, you will require these unique, cryptic names.

The example given here is the name of an ISDN-Card-PCI\VEN_2\4&1A671DOC &0&10F0. If the beginning of the identification is clear, you can replace the rest by ‘*’ as wildcard. With the command ‘devcon disable PCI\VEN_1244&DEV_0E00*’, you can deactivate the ISDN adapter that is no longer required. You can reactivate it with ‘devcon enable PCI\VEN_1244&DEV_0E00*’.

Since you would hardly want to enter such commands in the command line, create one batch file each for activating and deactivating a device. Start the text editor and enter the command to deactivate the device. Preferably, use the entire identification, so that the command remains unique even if you install similar devices later. Save the file as ‘isdn-stop.bat’ in the Windows folder. Then create another file with the devcon command to activate the device and save this one as ‘isdn.start.bat’. Drag both files to the desktop and create shortcuts. After completing this procedure, you can manage the switching comfortably with just a double click.

ATTENTION: Never deactivate devices about which you do not have complete information. You could be deactivating important components of the system and that might hamper the functioning of the Windows operating system.

Speeding up the Disk Cleanup tool For Windows 2000,XP

Speeding up the Disk Cleanup tool

While starting the disk cleaner, the tool analyzes the amount of space that can be freed by compressing old files first, b
efore it allows access to options. This is time consuming. While doing so, you don’t have to use the packing function at all.
Solvater Tip:

The time consuming analysis can be permanently stoppe
d by an intervention in the Registry. Start the Registry Editor and brows to the ‘HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches’ key. Select the sub-key ‘Compress old files’ and create an REG file through ‘File | Export’ as a backup copy to restore.

Then, delete the entire entry. After restarting the system, there is no more analysis so that you can reach the setting of the date carrier cleaning faster.

Besides, the option ‘Compress old files’ no longer exists in the dialog. If you want to undo the change, execute the created REG file by double-clicking on it an confirm the acceptance of the values in the Registry by clicking on ‘Yes’.

Printing files using specific printers through the ‘Send To’ menu

Printing files using specific printers through the ‘Send To’ menu

Documents can be printed directly from their context menu only on the default printer. However, many offices use several printers, for example, a laser printer for text output and an ink-jet printer for images and graphics. Here’s how you can print directly to a specific from the “Send To’ menu option.

Solvater Tip : Integrate the required output devices in the “Send to” context menu of the files. And then, all you need is a right click and you can choose a specific printer from your printer list for your printing job. It even works with the Adobe Distiller printer driver to print PDFs quickly. To do this, open the Windows Explorer by pressing [Windows] + [E]. Rest of the process is different for Vista and XP.

Windows XP

If the taskbar is visible on the left pane of Windows Explorer, click on “Folder”. In the directory structure, browse to C:\Documents and Settings’ and open your user profile. The directory has the same name as your user account. In that, select the folder “SendTo” in the tree structure and open it. Now drag and drop the required printer shortcut from the “printers and Faxes” in the control panel to SendTo folder.

Windows Vista:

Here, Yu will find your profile under “C:\Users’. From there, switch to the sub-directory “AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows’ and open the folder ‘SendTo’. Right-click on any free space on the right pane of Windows Explorer and open “ New\Folder” from the context menu. Name the folder as ‘Printer [2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de08002b30309d]’ and press [Enter]. The new folder will display a printer icon that contains the icons for all printers installed on the system. Click on the symbol of the desired printer and drag it to the “SendTo” directory. Windows creates a link, which can be opened from the menu. Note: Some file types, for instance, Outlook news in the MSG format, can be printed only using the default printer.

Not displaying selected programs on the Start menu

Not displaying selected programs on the Start menu

Windows displays a list of the most frequently used applications on the Start menu. However, you always start some application using a link on the desktop or from the quick start list. Therefore, your symbols replace other useful programs in the start menu.
Solvater Tip :

Using a Registry entry, decide which application should not appear in the Start menu. Under Vista, log in as administrator and open ‘Start | All Programs | Accessories | Run’ Enter “regedit.exe”, press [enter], and start the Registry Editor. Click ‘Continue’ (UAC). Under XP on, click ‘Start | Run’, type ‘regedit’, and press [Enter] to open the Registry Editor. No security query is asked. In the tree structure of the editor, brows to the ‘HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications’ key on the left pane. Here, select the sub-keys for the applications that you do not want to appear on the start list.

Finally, right-click anywhere on the right pane of the Registry Editor and select ‘New | String Value’. Overwrite the name suggested by Windows with ‘NoStartPage’. You do not need to assign any value to the character string – its existence alone has the desired effect. After you restart Windows, the programs will not appear in the list. If you later want to consider the program as one of the most frequently used applications, delete the ‘NoStartPage’ string.

Build A Home Theater PC (HTPC)

Build A Home Theater PC (HTPC)

Combine the big screen of your TV and the processing power of your computer and get a Home Theatre Personal Computer”

TVs and computers are the two most ubiquitous devices in our households, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. A TV concentrates on image and sound quality, but user control extends to just switching the thing on and off, flipping channels, and changing a setting or two. A computer, on the other hand, is all about user interactivity, but unless you have deep pockets, your PC screen will be significantly smaller than the TV you want. This means it cannot compare to the experience of watching a movie on a large screen.

If you build yourself a home theatre personal computer (HTPC), though, you can combine the best of the two, not to mention record TV programmes, rewind, fast forward, or pause a live TV broadcast, enjoy audio, and some times, live radio. Another practical aspect is that a HTPC saves space-the TV screen double up as a computer monitor when you need it to.

A HTPC means you’ll need to buy both software and hardware, here’s what you need.

The Hardware

Step 1:Get yourself a case the does not have noisy fans-noise from the cooling fans can mar the experience. Also, use a case that is well-ventilated and looks good, you won’t want a ugly-looking case messing up the décor of your living room. There are cases specially built for HTPC system that fit these requirement. We recommend the iBall Engine-X (Rs.1,700). You might want to ask your vendor for a micro power supply from VIP or cooler Master (around Rs.800), thought they aren’t easily available.

Step 2: The processor needs to be powerful enough to handle multithreaded applications like video encoding and decoding Dual-cores are preferable. We rescommend the AMD Athlon 64X2 5400+(Rs.6000),5600+(Rs.6,300), and the Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 (Rs.7,800).

Step 3: The mother board heed not be built for everclocking or have support for 45nm processors. In fact, over clocking is the bane of HTPC systems, such mother boards emit digital noise, which affects picture and sound quality. It’s preferable that the motherboards have passive cooling solutions like heat dispersing pipe to ensure quiet performance. HDMI slots for connecting to the TV are vital if you want to use the onboard graphics card. We recommend, for AMD processors, the MSI K9AGM2-690V (Rs.3,100) and the ASUS M2A-VM HDMI (Rs.5,225), for Intel processors, we’d say the Gigabyte GA-G33M S2H (Rs.5,950) and the Abit Fatality F-190 HD (Rs.7,500).

Step 4: The video card need not be too heavy-duty as the primary role is display, not serious gaming. The cards should have low power requirement, good video decoding capabilities, and a small form factors. We recommend the Galaxy GF-8400GS (Rs.2,900).

Step 5: The TV-Tuner + Video capture card is what distinguishes a HTPC from a regular PC. This card picks up live TV signals from either satellite or cable and outputs them live to the screen. The video capture part encodes the signals into a different format, usually MPEG2, and stores them for future viewing. The card could be single-or dual-tuner, and provide features like time-shifting (which means the ability to pause, rewind or fast-forward a live TV broadcast_. Other formats into which video is stores are DivX and WMV.

Good-quality cards usually come with a software bundle and remote. If you’re using a direct-to-home setup, you’ll need to but a video card with composite inputs ( the red, yellow and white connectors). We recommend the Leadtek Winfast DTV 1800H(Rs.3,990).

Step 6: It doesn’t hurt to have some extra memory, 1 GB of RAM is sufficient, though with Vista, you’re better off with 2 GB. Always use RAM in dual-channel mode-two 512 MB sticks if you want 1 GB of RAM, it’s much faster than single 1 GB stick. We recommend 2x 512 MB Kingston DDR2 667 MHz RAM 9Rs.800 each), or 2X1 GB of the same (Rs.1450 each).

Step 7: Both the hard drive and the optical drive must be a noiseless as possible. If you plan on recording and storing a lot of TV content-which would be natural, since it’s a home theatre PC you’re talking about-you’ll need a sufficiently large hard drive. The optical drive should be a DVD-RW drive if you want to carry your content around. We recommend the WD C Caviar SE16 WD3200A (320 GB, Rs.4,500), and the Lite-On LH-20A1p (DVD-Writer, Rs.1,700).

Step 8: The mouse and keyboard needed to control the software should be wireless-so you sit on a couch comfortably and control your system. The wireless combo should not infrared, as line-of sight issued crop up and are a pain to resolve. We recommend the Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3200.

Step 9: The TV is the centerpiece of your home theatre system. By default, the TV needs to be high definition and classy. We recommend Samsung Bordeaux LA32R81B (Rs.52,000).

Step 10: No home theatre experience is complete without the sound system. The TV will have speakers of its own, but the sound quality of any TV, no matter how good it looks, will be nothing to write home about. The picture on the huge TV is complemented with the surround should experience. Get yourself a 5.1 speaker for that. We recommend the Artis S6600R / FM (Rs.8,500)

Software

After you’ve plugged in all the hardware, there are still some things to do before getting the popcorn. If you’re running Windows Vista Home Premium or better, you’ll have Windows Media Center at you disposal. Windows XP Media Center Edition is only sold with a PC attached. So don’t bother with that. Windows-based software like Media Portal allows for a lot more customization. You can also build your system around Linux using freeware programs like MythTV . In fact, you can get specialized Linux distributions like Knopp Myth and Mythbuntu that comes with Myth TV installed. Linux-based systems offer a lot of customization, but you need to ensure all your hardware is supported.

Satisfaction!

We built our systems keeping in view value for money, but if you have cash to spare, go all out! HTPC building is a hobbyist activity, and a Google search brings up a wealth of related information with guides and reviews.

Do bear in mind what an HTPS is good for and when it doesn’t make sense-you don’t want to spend all that money and end up unhappy.

Install Windows XP With Latest Updates And Drivers

Install Windows XP With Latest Updates And Drivers

Why keep on outdated Windows XP installer… Your disc can include all the latest updates and hotfixes. We show you how.

There are thousands-maybe millions-of people out there who find that due to installing and uninstalling software are fiddling with the, Windows’ performance takes a hit over time. The best way out is a format + Windows reinstall, but this usually means having to download and install all the Windows updates all over again. This can be quite a pain in the backside, and more so for those on limited bandwidth connections.

There are two things you can do: either turn off automatic updates and live with your stock XP installation, or read through the following and make your own updated Windows XP disc, so that any subsequent formats and reinstalls are considerably less painful.

The first thing you need is a Windows XP installation disc. If you don’t already have the XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) update included in the installation disk, download it from http://tinyurl.com/7xthn. Now you’ll need to download and install the software that will help us customize the installation disc. It’s called nLite, and it’s available at www.nliteos.com. With these in place, you’re good to go.

Adding SP2

To integrate Windows XP SP 2 into the XP installation, copy the contents of the XP installation disc to new folder in C:\called XP. Now at a command prompt, navigate to where the SP2 download is. From there, enter this: WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU/integrate:C:/XP

You’ll see a new window showing you the progress of the integration.

Adding Hotfixes

It’s now time to include all the updates which were rolled out after SP2. There is a wonderful Windows XP Post SP2 pack that allows you to integrate all the hotfixes rolled out after the SP2 update. Download the 46MB update from www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack.html. Once you have this file, you need to install nLite. Once nLite is installed and started, select the directory where your Windows XP installation is stored-in our example, C:\XP. Click on Next through the screens till you reach the Integrate HotFixes window. Here, click Insert and browse to the folder where your Windows XP Post SP2 update is saved and select it. The Post-SP2 updates are ready to be integrated into your Windows XP installation.

Adding Drivers

If you have hardware for which Windows XP does not have the drivers, you can integrate it into your installation disc using nLite. You can only integrate.ini and .inf (Windows driver) files, but sometimes you’ll find drivers in the EXE format. You can extract them using WinRAR or WinZip and add the corresponding driver files into Windows.

Unattended Installation

In the next window, nLite will allow you to create an installation process that required the minimum of intervention from the user. You can choose between the various settings on the page and enter the CD key so that it is not asked for during installation, and also enter Regional Settings details, among other things. You can also change a lot of details-like removing the extra visual themes and automatically adding user accounts. The settings you enter here eventually save you a lot of time when you’re going about installing Windows on a large number of computers.

Custom Cosmetics

If you’re anything like us, you won’t be satisfied with just adding updates and drivers. We’ll only be using nLite to burn the final CD, so for now, minimize it and get ready to do some further tweaking…

Adding User Accounts

To automatically add user accounts to your custom installation, open Notepad and enter the following:

[ COMMANDS]

useraccounts.cmd”

Save this as CMDLINES.TXT under C:\XP\$oem$. In a new file, enter:

net user Jane qwe123/add

net localgroup

Administrators Jane /add

net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited

EXIT

Save this as USERACCOUNTS.CMD under C:\XP\$OEM$.

This will add the user Jane with the password qwe123 with Administrator rights. The maxpwage:unlimited ensures that the password never expires. If you want to create a username with a space, enclose it in double quotes, as in “Jane Doe”.

Custom Registry Edits

Quite a few of us spend a lot of time customizing XP after installation, so here are some tweaks that you can include to save you even more time!

Auto-Logon

If you are the only user of a computer, you might like to skip the Welcome Screen and get logged on automaticallt every time you start the computer. Open Notepad and enter:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

DefaultUserName”=“Jane”

DefaultPassword”= “qwe123”

AutoAdminLogon”= “1”

Save this as AUTOLOGON. REG under C:/XP/$OEM$. Next, open the CMDLINES.TXT we earlier created under C:\XP\$OEM$ and add:

[COMMANDS]

REEGEDIT / autologon.reg

As you’ve noticed, to run a Registry file during installation, it has to be saved in C:/XP/$OEM$, and a command has to be place for it in CMDLINES.TXT with the prefix REGEDIT/S . So remember this bit-even if we don’t mention it!

Disable Windows Tour: Open Notepad and enter:

[ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Applets\Tour]

“RunCount”=dword:00000000

Save the file as TOUR.REG and add its corresponding entry in

CMDLINES.TXT.

Disable Grouping of Similar Taskbar items

Save Notepad file as GROUP-INGTB.REG with the following:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]

“TaskbarGlomming”=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion \ Explorer\Advanced]

“TaskbarGlomming”=dword:00000000

Don’t forget to add its corresponding entry to CMDLINES.TXT.

Decrease Menu Delay:Create MENUDELAY.REG using Notepad with the following contents:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

“MenuShowDelay\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]

“menuShowDelay”= “20”

This will decrease the delay time for showing menus from 400 to 20 milliseconds. You can reduce this to 0. but that would open all the menus your mouse hovers over in the Start Menu.

Again, don’t forget to add the corresponding entry to CMDLINES.TXT.

Enable word wrap in Notepad

Create WordWrap.REG with Notepad:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Notepad]

“fWrap”=dword:00000001

Showing Hidden Files and Folders

Create HFF.REG in Notepad and enter:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mocrosoft\Windows\Currentversion\ Explorer\Advanced]

“Hidden”=dword:00000001

Look for more Registry tweaks at http://snipurl.com/1ti7w.

Finalising the Installation

Once you are ready with all the Registry tweaks and updates, go back to nLite to create your installation disc. Click Next till you reach the final screen. Click Direct Burn under Mode and click Next. This will create a Windows XP installation disc with…… everything!

Lock Your PC with Pen Drive

Lock Your PC With Your Pen Drive

Find how you can use your USB stick to lock your computer, among other things!

Tired of people starting your computer when you are not around and messing up custom settings? Wouldn’t it be cool if you could lock your computer by just removing your USB stick from it? Read on, and we’ll show you how…..

Boot Lock

This trick will allow you to use your USB stick as a key to boot into Windows, if someone tries to start the computer without your USB stick, it will display boot errors. Before we begin, let us tell you that playing with the BIOS and boot files of your computer may result in you not being able to boot into your Windows partition; so continue at your own risk! Now that we have absolved ourselves of all guilt, let’s begin.

Things you need

A 64MB or larger sized USB Stick (duh!), Windows Recovery Disk (just in case).

Step 1: Unhide hidden and protected files: go to Tools > Options > View, check Show hidden files and un-check Hide protected system files.

Step 2: From the drive where Windows is installed (normally C:\), copy the files boot.ini, ntdlr and NTDETECT.COM to your USB Stick.

Step3: Now, we need to go into your BIOS, so restart the computer and keep jabbing as soon as the computer starts.

Step4: Once in the BIOS, enable USB Drive as the first boot device. You might have to enable USB Legacy Support on older BIOS.

Step5: Restart your computer, if all goes well you should be able to log into Windows, if not, then unplug the USB Stick, return to the BIOS and change the First Boot device to your hard disk drive and repeat the steps above.

Step6: Once you are logged into Windows, go to your Windows drive and rename boot.ini to boot.bak.

Step7: To check if you have setup everything correctly, eject your USB stick and reboot the computer. You should get error messages on the screen such as “Invalid Boot.ini” or “Windows could not start”.

Step8: Incase Windows does not load, use your Windows Recovery Disk by following the steps mentioned at http://tinyurl.com/s9sd2.

The Other Way

For the less brave-hearted, instead of preventing Windows from booting, you can choose to just lock your computer with your USB stick.

USB System Lock
A freeware program, USB System Lock works flawlessly while locking and unlocking your computer. You can find it on this month’s Computing DVD. When you first install USB system Lock, it detects your USB stick and creates a digital key on it. This key is used by the program to authenticate the user and log into the computer. Strangely, the program is not included in the start-up list by default. To add it there, you need to drag Agent from the USB System Lock entry under All Programs to the Startup folder in the same menu. If you happen to accidentally delete the key from your USB stick while working on the protected computer you can re-assign a key using Start > Programs > USB System Lock > Key Disk Generator.

My Lock 2.0

This program takes USB-based computer locking to a whole new level for Rs.400, you can lock access to not only yours PC but the keyboard, CD Drive and even access to Safe Mode. You can also set a particular time for the computer to automatically lock itself. What is most interesting about the program is that you can set a passphrase so that you can use it to log into the computer even without the USB Stick plugged in. The 30-dy trial of trial of this program can be found on this month’s Computing DVD.

Open Notepad and type in the following...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\runas]

@=”Take Ownership”

Save the file as takeown.reg. Double-click on the file and click Yes when prompted. There is no need to Reboot.

Copy File Paths
You can copy the path of the Clipboard. Just right-click on the file while holding down [Shift]and you will find a new option in the path of a folder in this manner

Trim Thick Borders
Probab
ly to show off the Transparency feature , all windows in Vista have Thick Borders, which can be an eyesore especially when you are not using Aero. To trim the borders to your taste, Open the Classic appearance Settings dialog by right-clicking on desktop and choosing Personalize. Click on Window Color and Appearance. [If you have Aero enabled, you shall have to click Open Classic Appearance Properties for more color Options]. Click the Advanced Button, Select Border Padding in the Item drop down field, and change the size from the default 4 to 0 [Experiment with the different values].

Quick Picks

Hover your mouse on the icon to display a pop-up with the current track information. Click the middle mouse button on this icon to play/pause the current track.
Scrolling the mouse wheel will change volume. If you hold down [Shift] while scrolling , the mouse wheel seeks through the current track. Hold [Ctrl] while scrolling the mouse wheel to skip through the tracks in the play list.
Drag and Drop items in to the tray icon to open a pop-up menu allowing you to choose from Append to Play list, Append and play, and queue after current Track. The trayicon also indicates the song position.

Check boxes to Select

You can use check boxes to select multiple files , Click on the Organize menu and choose Folders and search options. Now on view tab, you will see Use check boxes to select items. Check the box against this and click OK.
Using check boxes to select files instead of doing the same by holding down [Shift] or [Ctrl] gives you better control and prevents accidental copying or moving of files. To select all files, simply check the box next to name (above the list of names).

Add the Encrypt/Decrypt Option To The Context Menu

Vista has the option to Encrypt and Decrypt files by accessing the properties dialog. But there is a better and faster way to do it – just add these options to the context menu. Open the Registry Editor and navigate to...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Advanced
In the right pane, create a new 32-bit DWORD value called ..Encryption context menu and give it a value of 1. Now whenever you right-click a file, You will see a new option, Encrypt, which will let you encrypt it [along with the parent folder, if necessary]. Once it is encrypted when you right-click on it, you will see the Decrypt option.

Share Folders As Easily As In XP

In Vista, when you right-click on a folder and click Share, a Wizard starts, which is meant to make things easier, but in a reality is a bit of confusing for many ex-XP users .You cannot choose the share name and will instead be assigned a weird name such as..
\\ computer \ users \ user name\ Data. To share in the XP way, click Properties instead of Share. Select the Sharing tab and
click Advanced Sharing. Check the box against Share this folder and choose a share name. You can also set permissions here.

Hide The
Floppy Drive

You no longer use a Floppy Drive these days, so there's no reason for it to be displayed in My computer. Open the Registry Editor and go to ..

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer
If this key doesn't exist, create it. The modify or create a 32-bit DWORD named No drives. Assign it a value of 1.

Assign A Hot Key To The Snipping Tool

Vista comes with a nifty screen shot Utility called the Snipping Tool, which can capture all or parts of the screen. Problem is, the tool has no provision for a hot key to bring up
the windows .
In the Start menu, click on All Programs and then the Accessories folder, and you'll see the Snipping Tool. Right- click on it and select Properties. You'll see an empty Shortcut key text box, in which you can place the mouse cursor and press a hot key such as [Ctrl] + [F12].

Symlinks in Vista

One of the interesting features of Linux-Symbolic links finally makes an appearance in Windows. You can create symlinks using the Command-line Utility mklink.
The syntax is as below :
MKLINK [[/D] / [/H] / [/J]] Link Target

Where:
/D Creates a directory symbolic link (soft link). Default is a file symbolic link
/H Creates a hard link ( link to a file) instead of a symboli
c link
/J Creates a Directory Junction link Specifies the path ( relative or absolute) that the new link refers to...

For example, if you want to make

D:\ Data to be available from the folder
D:\ Maindata, use C:\mklink/D
D:\ Main Data D:\ Data

If you now look in D:\Maindata, you will see whatever files were in the other directory.

User UAC ( User Access Control)

User Access Control is that annoying thing keeps on popping up tirelessly to ask you ifit is OK to install a particular program when you try to install one. It is one of the biggest irritants in Vista, but we must warn you that disabling it will render your system less secure.
Open the control Panel, type in user account in the search box, and press [Enter]. You'll see the links for Turn User Access Control (UAC) on or off. Click it. Uncheck the box, reboot your computer, and you will no longer be bothered by UAC. There is an even faster way
to disable UAC from the command line: use

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k%widir%\
System32\reg.exe ADD
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v
EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d o /f
For the security-conscious, we'd suggest an alternative method. In this one, only the UAC of the Administrator account is disabled; other users will go through the same security mechanism as before. Open the Registry Editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Create a 32-bit DWORD
Consent prompt behavior Admin and set its value to 0. Restart. What actually happens here is, You elevate the privilege level for the Administrator.
